Description
British sculptor Nigel Boonham has been in Sydney overseeing the installation of his two statues which complete the marble triptych in 2010 at St. Marys Cathedral first built in 1820s.
One of the statues is the Risen Christ in the picture on the left and on other side is the statue of Mary Magdalene (hidden by the stairs on the right) . He also design the alter.
Being about nine metres apart, the statues and the altar form a triangular figuration.
The risen Christ and Mary are looking at each other.
Archbishop Cardinal Pell asked Nigel to design and make an altar for the Cathedral three years ago. Nigel says that just about immediately an entombed Christ came to mind.
He then formed the idea to have the dead Christ on the face of the altar - a long, horizontal, flat relief like an after-impression left on the stone.
Cardinal Pell said if there was to be an entombed Christ on the face of the altar, then there would need to be a Risen Christ - to counteract any incorrect suggestion that the dead Christ was being worshipped.
The altar was completed and in place just prior to World Youth Day. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XV1 dedicated the new altar during his visit to Sydney.
