Description
This is Manly’s oldest church. Manly’s first church and oldest surviving building, the Congregational Church was built circa
1862-63. The source of the stone is uncertain, but may have been H G Smith’s Kangaroo Hill
quarries.
Smith was a major benefactor and ‘friend’ to Manly’s influential early Congregationalists. He
knew and shared many interests with the powerful John Fairfax and David Jones who helped
found Manly and many other Congregational Churches. Smith’s eldest son, Henry Stinton, laid
the foundation stone on 7 August 1862.
Sympathetic stone extensions were made to the rear of the church in the 1880s, and to the
eastern side in 1907 to accommodate a Congregational school.

Hi Miroslava - With the colourful floral cross against the monotone structure, this has an interesting haunted feeling or atmosphere to it, nicely composed - Chris
