Description
Pycnoporus coccineus is white-rot decomposer fungus in the family Polyporaceae. They are widespread on dead wood. The fungus was first described scientifically by Elias Magnus Fries in 1851.
The Australian Aborigines used it medically - "sucked to cure sore mouths", rubbed inside the mouths of babies with oral thrush, rubbed on sore lips. It has also been used as a teething ring.
