Description
The cassowary is the world’s most dangerous bird according to Guinness World Records.
I have to say, the casque on top of Cassowary's head remind me of dinosaur parts.
The casque is made from a sponge like substance. A layer of keratin covers this. No one is quite sure what the purpose of a casque is. It may act as a shock absorber for when the cassowary moves through the rainforest. Another theory is that the casque may amplify sounds for the cassowary to hear them better.
This is the Casuarius casuarius johnsonii — Southern Cassowary, Australian Cassowary, Double-wattled Cassowary and his picture taken safely from behind a glass at Wildlife sanctuary at Darling Harbour in Sydney.
Cassowaries raise themselves to full height when confronted. They then begin to emit a hiss. Cassowaries are very defensive though. They can jump into the air and kick at people with their strong legs. They have not killed a human though since 1926. They are vulnerable and the southern cassowary is one of 20 birds that the Australian Government has prioritised resource allocation to support the species recovery effort. The Australian Government has secured over $10 million in initiatives supporting the southern cassowary, including eighteen Green Army teams and $6 million in projects that directly protect and restore its habitat.
They are important part of the environment !!!!

What a fabulous creature and I agree with you ... they do appear to have dinosaur ancestry. Interesting info on this unique bird. l/fv/tw
