Description
Green and golden bell frog was once one of the most common frogs in south-east Australia . Unfortunately it has undergone a major decline, and is now classified as globally Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species .
He was made famous globally when part of Sydney Olympics development had to be moved to safe his habitat. The vulnerable green and golden bell frog has leapt into the spotlight of another key Sydney infrastructure project. Another important habitat is the Kogarah Golf Club in Sydney's south, which has been earmarked as a construction site for the $16.8 billion WestConnex transport project. But WestConnex project manager Christopher Swann has dismissed the concerns, saying while part of the club will be used as a construction site, protection measures are in place for the frog breeding ponds. The Federal Environment Department is now assessing the impact of the WestConnex on the green and golden bell frog and other vulnerable plants and animals.
It is usually found around dams, creeks and lakes, often where sites have been disturbed by human activity such as disused quarries. Their preferred habitats always have ample vegetation both in and around the water.
Green and Golden Bell Frog populations have declined, probably as a result of habitat loss, introduced predators and other factors. The Homebush Bay population has been monitored by the Australian Museum ever since Olympics and seems to be stable despite the surrounding site development.
