Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….
When you go on the Fairfax walk in North Head Sydney, behind Manly you will see many native flowers and shrubs. This is Banksia ericifolia ,Heath Banksia. The flowers are in cylindrical spikes about 15 - 20 cm long, varying from orange to yellow. The hooked styles vary from red to black, being red with yellow tips when the brushes are newly opened. The dead flowers remain on the cone for a long time. The seeds are enclosed by woody valves hidden by the flowers. The flower in the back is and old one.
This banksia is most important for bees and honey-eating birds, being one of the few winter flowerers. Small birds may disappear completely from a heathland where the Banksia ericifolia has been destroyed by fire.
