Description
From blocks of creamy marble quarried in northern Italy to beautifully sculptured statues on the front of the sanctuary of St Mary's Cathedral .
British sculptor Nigel Boonham has been in Sydney overseeing the installation of his two statues which complete the marble triptych in 2010 at St. Marys Cathedral first built in 1820s.
One of the statues is the Risen Christ in the picture and on other side is the statue of Mary Magdalene . He also design the alter.
Being about nine metres apart, the statues and the altar form a triangular figuration.
The risen Christ and Mary are looking at each other.
With the statue of the risen Chirst it is clear the drapery restricts him and Nigel says this acts as symbolic representation of the spiritual burden he is carrying from the passion and the harrowing of hell.
"The dark shadowy care formed by Christ's legs and drapery represents the darkness he has walked through while the top half of Christ is emerging in the light."
