Description

This painting won first place in the two competition categories which were The Thorndike Family choice, and Public Choice! It was commissioned byJane Small, a committee member of The Days of Syn committee. Every year they hold an event in Romney Marsh to celebrate this real character from history. Dr Syn was a law abiding Priest by day but at night, he became a notorious smuggler, and would dress up like a scarecrow and paint his horse with phosporous, to make is glow in the dark. Russell Thorndike wrote numerous books about Dr Syn but later The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh was made into a series by Disney in 1962. Recent interest has brought about a revival.
