HMAS Labuan (II) commissioned into the RAN on 9 March 1973 at Walkers Shipyard Maryborough having been accepted from the Army earlier in the day. She was one of six Landing Craft Heavy (LCH) vessels to join the First Australian Landing Craft Squadron based at HMAS Moreton in Brisbane.

With her International Fleet Review commitments completed, Labuan departed Australian waters to participate in Operation RENDER SAFE, an annual, Australian-led operation to help remove the explosive remnants of World War II (WWII) from the South-West Pacific. The 2013 operation was conducted in the Solomon Islands in November and December.
