Description
As you enter the cathedral through the main doors, you will see the white pinnacles of the High Altar Screen, as well as the rich colors of the Great North Window beyond. However it was nighttime when I took the pic so you cannot see the the colours of the window.
The High Altar Screen contains many open niches, but they are empty; the statues have never been completed.
The High Altar Screen was designed by William Wilkinson Wardell, an architect best known for his work in Australia where he emigrated to from England in 1858. Wardell actually designed the entire cathedral, as well as the High Altar and its screen, following the fire of 1865 which ruined the original cathedral.
The altar was completed and in place just prior to World Youth Day. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XV1 dedicated the new altar during his visit to Sydney.
The statue of Mary was donated to the Cathedral in the 19th century.
Half of all profits from sale of these pictures will be donated to St. Mary's cathedral.
